Peanuts

My Editorial Cartoon commemorating Peanuts creator, Charles Schultz’s accomplishments, which appeared in the SingTao Daily, was collected by the museum in 2002.

In August 2003, I was invited to attend the dedication of The Charles Schulz Memorial And Museum in Santa Rosa, California. I sat at the same table with T.R. Shepard III, President of King Features Syndicate and Mrs. Schultz, Jenny.

When I moved to Northern California, from Chicago in 1981, I started networking with local cartoonists, and attended gatherings when well known cartoonists were invited as guest speakers.  Some of the guest speakers included: the late, Phil Frank, of "Farley"; Wiley Miller of "Non Sequitur"; Sergio Aragone's of Mad Magazine; an editor and a rumored former playmate from Playboy; makers of Monster Inc animation, and of course the great Charles Schultz, of Peanuts fame.

Not many people know that Schultz was an avid ice hockey player, and owned his own hockey ring in Santa Rosa.   In the early 80’s I was among a group of cartoonists invited to go to Santa Rosa to celebrate Schultz's birthday. Before we go, we learned that another one of Schultz’s hobbies was collecting marbles, the kind kids used to play on the dirt before video games. To show our respect, all the attending cartoonists brought bags of marbles, which were then collected by Schultz, and poured into a tall glass jar at the party.
Another tradition for Schultz, was to distribute copies of a Peanuts comic strip that he drew, which only contained three completed frames.  He would ask his guests to draw the last frame, and then he would critique and award three winners. I was one of the winners, and received a sweater. Along with the sweater, I received the copy of my winning drawing, including Schultz’s signature, and a short message from him. This signed cartoon is very precious to me, and I will treasure it for the rest of my life.

Schultz's signature was at the center, the smudge was the BBQ source.

Potstickers

In 1994 I was awarded Third Place for my cartoon, “Potstickers”  during the Marin County Fair & Exhibition of California.

I have always thought about developing Potstickers into an ongoing comic strip, but -------, and that was almost 20 years ago, SIGH!

  3. I still cannot read the last frame. Did you draw the fourth frames in all three strips? I enjoyed my visit to your site. I don't understand the "Comment as:" part. I hope you can get this message. Vicky郭譽珮

    1. 多謝捧場,

Did you mean the three strips from Schultz? Yes I did the 4th frame of all the strips, but only the one on the third strip (confusing?)won the prize. The drawing is badly copied, maybe I need to redo it later. The caption on the drawing says" I hate acid rain". I think Schultz liked my satire or rotten sense of humor.

      我的漫畫格式就有點像牛哥的畫(自我吹一下),瘋狂諷刺. 顯然和諱瑞華和傅勵生的畫風大不同.

      請多指教.
